“There is no doubt that the work we are doing is helping our
communities to understand how they can prosper by working with the environment around them and not destroying it.”
Darijan’s work in the beautiful Banjski Trnovski Plateau in Slovenia has taught him that we are all perhaps finally learning the lessons of history.
“In the past, local farmers were poor and could never afford the cost of doctors or medicines. So they turned to the countryside around them. They believed that that there was a flower to cure every disease”.
Since joining the “Traditional and Wild” Project, Darijan has seen real enthusiasm in the region to learn about the properties and uses of wild plants. So much of this knowledge was lost in the 20th Century but now Darijan believes that many people in his region want to learn again and share their knowledge.
“Our foundation organises many workshops to inform and educate local people on a variety of important issues but nothing compares to the enthusiasm shown for the ‘Traditional and Wild’ project. Everyone wants to find out more about the uses of wild plants. No other events have ever been so popular”.
He believes that local people are rediscovering the old skills and knowledge of their ancestors and realising that there is a serious place for traditional practices in today’s communities. “Traditional and Wild” provides the information, training, ongoing monitoring and support that are necessary to re-establish these rural industries for a long-term and sustainable future.
